Outline

This talk endeavours to give a none-technical introduction to a particular aspect of mathematical research of the Internet.

The presentation focuses on three points. Firstly, it aims at convincing mail administrators and managers that statistics can help them run better mail systems. Secondly, a couple of stochastic processes are introduced. The Poisson process which is memory-less and long range dependent processes which are memory-full are described along with reasons why both are important. Lastly some results based from traces of the University of York network are presented.

It is hoped that this work will inspire more collaboration between the IT and Academia
