Internships
We publish "professional computing" and "popular science" books. Our Sustainable Energy - without the hot air was described on Radio 4 (21-May-2009) as "a publishing phenomenon", and ranked at 31 overall on Amazon UK. In the October-2009 editions of The Bookseller it ranked no. 1 in green books by revenue, and no. 2 by volume, for the sales quarter; it ranks at no. 17 of all time in that sector.
Our interns work on real projects, not artificial work experience. (No McJobs -- we don't have a photocopier: you won't spend all your time on clerical crap.) What you do makes a difference to the success of our titles. Because we are so small, you're much more involved that you could ever be in a large publishing house.
We have a reputation for being well-organized, and for the quality of our training: an internship with us is a two-way street, not slave labour. We encourage you to attend relevant IPG and SYP seminars and events, which we pay for. We take only one intern at any time, to make sure we can devote the necessary time to make it worthwhile for you too. We don't pay a salary, but do make a fixed contribution towards and expenses.
We don't have any intern vacancies at present, but expect to advertise one or two in the middle of December-2009.
Previous intern comments
[my manager] allowed me to work as autonomously as possible, but was available to offer guidance when needed. This meant that I was able to learn a great deal about how the publishing industry works through dealing with tasks myself rather than being spoon fed. Consequently, I found the internship both challenging and rewarding.
I was able to draw upon the experience I gained with UIT in a recent job interview. My internship definitely stood me in good stead and contributed to my sucessful appointment in a new full-time role.
