Internships

About us:

	UIT is a small and successful independent publisher
	based in Cambridge. We publish books that
	explain complex and important
	issues (especially in the sciences) to the
	intelligent layman. In 2009 we published
	'Sustainable Energy - without the hot air' which has
	been the no. 2 bestselling green/environment for the
	last two years. We also publish a few general
	non-fiction titles, such as 'And Now The Shipping
	Forecast', which we brought out last month.

Intern vacancies - Publishing work experience - publicity

	more books in our "Without the hot air" series. The
	successful candidate will assist in:
	* Planning the launch of new titles.
	* Preparing newsletters and other online material.
	* Assembling and maintaining lists of relevant and
	  interested people to be informed about our titles.
	* Preparing for author events.

	2 (two)

Start Date

	Aug/Sep 2011, and Oct/Nov 2011

Further Details

	Internship is for 4-6 weeks. We offer about 16 hours
	paid work per week, for about £100. You can use our
	resources for learning outside this time if you
	wish. We are looking for one intern during the
	Summer, and another around Sep/Oct/Nov to help
	launch an important new book on sustainable
	materials.

Qualifications

	Any degree discipline, but you should have:

	* Excellent A-levels.

	* A good degree (if graduate). Quantitative subjects
	  such as science, economics or engineering are
	  especially welcome, but not a requirement.

	* Experience of working in an office. Publishing
	  experience is not a requirement but is obviously
	  an advantage.

	* Excellent written and spoken English. We have many
	  overseas authors writing in English which is not
	  their mother tongue, who must be guided correctly
	  and confidently.

How to apply:

	* In 250 words or less, say why this work appeals to
	  you. If you use meaningless phrases such as
 	  "team player", "outstanding", and "relish
	  challenges", you will be disqualified.

	* Append a CV.

	* Say where you saw the advertisement for this position.

	Both documents should be plain text (.TXT) or PDF,
	and sent by email, not post.

Previous intern comments

[my manager] allowed me to work as autonomously as possible, but was available to offer guidance when needed. This meant that I was able to learn a great deal about how the publishing industry works through dealing with tasks myself rather than being spoon fed. Consequently, I found the internship both challenging and rewarding.

I was able to draw upon the experience I gained with UIT in a recent job interview. My internship definitely stood me in good stead and contributed to my sucessful appointment in a new full-time role.
