About the Author

Peter Jefferson started working for the BBC in the 1960s. Most of that time he was a radio announcer and news reader, and this was how he came upon the Shipping Forecast which he was to read right up to 2009. After leaving the staff by way of early retirement, he decided to become a freelance "voice". He continued to work for Radio 4 much of the time but also did voice overs and appeared (vocally or in glorious colour) on various radio and TV programmes, including Eastenders, Panorama, My Family, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, The Mighty Boosh, The Bill, Peak Practice and Holby City. He currently reads the quotes on BBC Radio 4’s Quote … Unquote.

Errata

  • Page 99 ought to say the Piper Alpha drilling platform was operated by the California-based 'Occidental Oil (Caledonia) Ltd' and not by BP.
  • From Terry Francis (ex-Leading Signalman RN), August 2011
Page 201 indicates that Rum has not been issued on a daily basis (in the RN) since 1990. I think you'll find that, in fact, the daily rum issue was discontinued in 1970. In fact the 41st anniversary of the event (generally known as Black Tot Day) was 'celebrated' approx. 2 weeks ago.
